(Keep in mind, this is based on their older albums) This band has a sound a bit like Panic at the Disco in songs where their male vocalist sings. They have an indie vibe, but it's an older indie sound. Even though a lot of current indie music has an 80's or even 90's sound to it, this isn't that kind of older sound. If we can call the 'other kind of older' sound "vintage", this is almost a sort of stale sound. However, as a 90's child, I don't mind.
The biggest thing I appreciate about this band (and this song in particular) is the classical music aspects in harmony with modern. There is the dramatic piano music, and there are electric guitars and drums. As a prime example, we have here my favorite song by them.
It's called "Eileen". The intro is my favorite part of the song because the piano solo is so full. Just so full. I can't decide how to define it further than that. I wish the instrumental here went on longer before the singing starts. Sometimes I rewind it back to the beginning before I let the rest of the song play through, even though it doesn't end there. It's just so pretty by itself, but still it works beautifully with the words. The song continues with piano as the only background music for the whole first verse. It plays on underneath and between the vocals and kind of echos the emotion behind the words. Then, the drums and guitar come in and it's still a pretty song, just different. It reminds me of the progression of a day- the beauty and serenity of a peaceful morning, turning into a still beautiful, but now sort of crazy lunch time.
The song continues and ends with catchy, fast paced piano along with a full band sound. It's sort of a sad sound, along with a "the show must go on" sound.
"We'll be fine in the morning
We'll be fine in the morning
It's getting late so we must sleep
I'll see you in the morning Eileen."
